Put away the rosé, at least until next summer. Now’s the time to sip (and support!) B.C. wineries’ best of the autumn season. Robust reds and buttery whites make for the perfect pairing with those cosy fall meals you’re whipping up at home. —Catherine Dunwoody
bartier brothers 2018 cabernet franc ($30). With hints of blackberry and blueberry this red’s soft tannins make for a velvety smooth sipper, and perfect for at-home-bistro night paired with steak frites.
cedarcreek estate winery block 4 pinot noir ($55). The Okanagan certainly does Pinot well, and this beauty checks all the boxes with hints of plum, red currant and a long finish. This is the autumn to master that roast duck recipe, lovely served with this wine.
blue grouse estate winery quill gamay noir ($27). Reds don’t have to be heavy. This Gamay is considered downright lively, with fruity hints of cherry, black currant and plum. Love it with charcuterie, my go-to Friday night nosh ‘n Netflix.
phantom creek estates red 2016 (from $48 at private wine stores). This stunning new winery just opened this past summer on the Black Sage Bench near Oliver, B.C. Try this blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with beef bourguignon for a fireside supper.
time winery fourth dimension ($35). A gorgeous blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, balanced but leaning toward bold with its notes of red fruit and black pepper. Perfect with an earthy wild mushroom tagliatelle.
liquidity wines reserve chardonnay ($65). Indeed a treat, with notes of pear, honeysuckle and caramel, this creamy French oaked Chardonnay is fabulous with lemon parmesan risotto.
mcwatters collection chardonnay ($30). Harry McWatters, who sadly passed away last year, was known as the “grandfather of B.C. wine,” and surely would be proud of this lovely, accessible white. Hints of lemon zest and buttered toast, serve it with seafood or a simple roast chicken.
narrative rosé ($20). OK, we caved and included this as there really are no seasonal “rules” around when to drink pink. If you love it, drink it—year round. Bone dry and so nice with a French omelette and frisse salad brunch.
