It was just over a year ago when One Girl Can pivoted and moved their annual fundraising event at Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom to a virtual event for the first time. While we’re all familiar with the virtual environment and have become experts at learning to unmute before we speak, this year’s virtual fundraiser is one you won’t want to miss. Here are five reasons to attend the BE in Kenya virtual fundraising event on June 3. —Kate Lollar
feel something much more hopeful than “languishing.” Engaging in a meaningful activity helps spark flow in your life. One Girl Can’s annual fundraiser shines a light on the personal stories of girls in Kenya. Meet Millie, a university graduate whose education was put on pause because of the pandemic, but she didn’t let that stop her from mentoring hundreds of young girls, helping them find their voice and use it to influence change. Likely we haven’t all given back in such a meaningful way, but now is your opportunity. Be part of something special that puts what is truly important into perspective. Pay it forward and help empower girls to drive change.
community (remember what that felt like?)—be part of something good. For many of us, the world has never felt lonelier. We miss connecting with community. One Girl Can’s BE in Kenya fundraiser brings like-minded, caring individuals from all over the world to work together to support education and mentoring for hundreds of girls. While there are many ways to donate, one of the most exciting is the live auction, where attendees can bid in real time to win once in a lifetime travel experiences. Soon we will be able to travel again and what better way than knowing you’re on a trip that gave back helps to rebuild those local economies? The silent auction is another great way to give. One Girl Can has partnered with coveted brands and put together beautiful packages that you won’t want to miss out on. Ultimately, the evening is about people coming together from all over the world to raise money for gender equality in Kenya.
travel (virtually) to Kenya and experience 360 degrees of culture and connection. Discovering somewhere new is one of the most exciting (and most missed) experiences we have as humans. One Girl Can is delighted to share a very special part of the world. Follow One Girl Can scholarship recipient, Faith, as she leads you on a tour through the Kibera settlement in Nairobi. Explore at your own pace through the immersive experience.
learn the impact of scholarships and help send more girls to school. Special guests Canadian actor Dan Levy and OGC ambassador Mackenzie Davis discuss the holistic approach of One Girl Can and the massive impact it makes in the community. They’ll chat about why and how to get involved and how you can fund a need right from the comfort of your own home.
help build a desperately needed dormitory in Kibera that will ensure going to school is safer for girls. Ushirika Secondary School needs a dormitory, a safe sanctuary where girls can have their own space to study, to stay in school (without fear of being impregnated or forced to marry), to have access to clean and safe washroom facilities and to avoid dangerous walks to and from school. The cost of the dormitory is $200,000 and One Girl Can relies on the success of this year’s fundraiser to fund it. By simply buying a ticket (starting at $25) and attending BE in Kenya an immersive, virtual fundraiser, you are helping change lives by creating safe spaces for girls to thrive in their education and bring about lasting change in their communities.
